When I open up the following location on my PC:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Mullett\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WKANTNZI" - I have a mass (some 1,000 plus sometimes) of various files. Some I recognise as jpg's from web pages visited, some are a complete mystery.
They differ at times, and even though I delete them, a new batch reappear. Where do they all come from?

It's your browser cache. You can clear it selecting Tools | Internet Options... and clicking Delete... in the Browsing history section, but as long as Internet Explorer is active the cache will fill up again.
