    You can't popup a textbox, only a form. Is the notes field in the same table? If so, are you just trying to make a control visible? You can do that by setting it's visible property in code. You could also use the InputBox funtion to popup an inputbox for them to enter a note and then use code to write the value to a hidden control.

    If not, you need to pass the key values to the popup form in its OpenArgs argument or else have it read the values from the open form.

    my 3 tab form has a notes field on the last tab, instead of having a click the button by choosing the tab first, I

    Sorry, but I don't see how you're saving any effort at all by adding a button for them to click instead of a tab for them to click. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> If you insist on a button, then just use the Click event of the button to make the appropriate page of your tab control visible. That way, they can see if there is already a note there and edit it if they choose.
