Autolaunching of application from web page

A user has requested within their intranet to have the ability to provide to their users a hyperlink that, when clicked, would download an application and start it on the clicker's personal machine.

Can someone point me to a web page describing how to set this up?

Are you talking about pushing an application out to users? A search at http://www.google.com using the expression

website design OR intranet "push application"

returned 43 hits. You might want to explore there.

Re: do I mean push

I don't know what you mean as push. I think of push as the process of sending news, etc. out to a client for display.

What I am talking about is more along the lines of what I see when I run IE and there are service packs/updates that have been issued - I get prompted about whether I want to download these, or to run them from the net, and then if I say to run them, the app downloads and runs or at least runs from the incoming datastream.

The idea is that for novice or technophobe users to click on a link and get something installed without having to decide directories, etc.

How about zipping the application as a self extracting file and storing the extraction path?
Otherwise, I think you may need 'special' installation software otherwise, such as available from Linder Software

Turning the app into a self-extracting one and storing the path might be okay - where can I read more about that approach?

You could try http://www.winzip.com/ibrowser.htm

WinZip Internet Browser Support Add-On
The WinZip Internet Browser Support Add-On, a separate, free program that works with WinZip, automates much of the work normally associated with downloading compressed files from the Internet. When you click on a Zip file using Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator/Communicator, this add-on will enable WinZip to take over when the download is completed. WinZip automatically moves the downloaded file to your download folder (initially set to c:download) and then (optionally) opens the file.
