    Thumbs up

I use mailwasher to pre-scan emails and for the last 6 years it has successfully scanned Hotmail, until yesterday.

I now keep getting error code 403 (access forbidden). In MS's normal fashion there is a load of understanable rubbish of the Hotmail help screens.

Does anybody know if they have stopped access other than via the web, thus making the advertising unavoidable?

Also the sre instructions for a pop3 style access, but this keeps timing out.

This may explain why it is happening - Hotmail access via Outlook Express dies on September 1 - Ars Technica.

Did you setup POP3 access as outlined at How to Access Free Windows Live Hotmail via POP in Any Email Program - About Email?

    Thanks Joe,

That explains why it doesn't work anymore, but I still can't get Mailwasher to scan. I've got all the right entries, but it just hangs

    I'll just keep persevering

Maybe you should try to contact Mailwasher support.

    A question about Hotmail.

I have not been able to connect to any of my hotmail.com e-mail accounts on two different computers for about two weeks.
If I go to MSN.com and click the Hotmail link - it times out. Same with URL www.hotmail.com

Does the above change affect my access?

    Thanks

The above change has no effect on accessing hotmail via the web.

    Thanks Joe.

Just tried to login to hotmail.com using MSN and www.hotmail.com.
In both cases it timed-out. Anyone else having problems?

    Any suggestions?

Are you using IE? Do you get a browser error or a hotmail error?

    Joe:

I usually use FireFox, have also tried IE with same results.

I get a "NETWORK TIMED OUT" error message after about 60 - 90 seconds of searching.

I just tried logging into my infrequently used Hotmail account and had no trouble. I was amused to see it trying to treat an email from Microsoft as junk mail!

Do you have Hotmail in your hosts file?

    Can you ping www.hotmail.com?

When I go to Hotmail.com, it immediately redirects my browser to a login page associated with http://mail.live.com/

Can you access that address directly? Do you have browser settings or security software settings that might be blocking the redirect?

I am not sure what you mean by "host" and forget how to ping an address.

I tried URL http://mail.live.com/ and it again Timed Out.

I have had this hotmail account for about ten years alone with other e-mails accounts
    on yahoo.com, g-mail.com, netscape.net.

Hotmail is the only one that seems to be unstable.

In case Joe is busy at the moment, the hosts file is a system file Windows uses to look up the addresses of servers. These take precedence of information supplied by other sources, including official sources. Sometimes "old" information becomes lodged in the hosts file and blocks access to sites. More information on the hosts file: Hosts file @ Wikipedia.

You also could try deleting any cookies you might have for hotmail.com or live.com, in case those have become corrupt. This is easy in Firefox using Tools>Options>Privacy>Show Cookies (careful - do NOT click remove all). I don't recall the details for how to manage individual cookies in Internet Explorer.
