Prob1: Forcing a template (Eng/Word/97-2000)

I need to be able to force a templates use within our authoring department as such: when an author opens an older document based on "author.dot", the document needs to be automatically updated and attached to author2.dot. How is this possible with and add-in?

It is probably easier to have everyone in your authoring department place the template called author2.dot in their user templates directory and rename it to author.dot.

Then the same template name is attached to the file but the authoring department will have the different functionality provided by the other template.

Thanks. that was a solution we opted not to go down earlier, but if there is no alternative we will need to take your advice.

Thanks!

If I can't talk you out of it then I guess I should try some code to do what you asked.

Sub AutoOpen()
If Right(ActiveDocument.AttachedTemplate, 10) = "author.dot" Then
ActiveDocument.AttachedTemplate = "Servernamedir1dir2author2.dot"
ActiveDocument.UpdateStyles
End If
End Sub

If this was loaded in your Normal or in an active add-in then you would get the required effect.

OK... after thinking heavily about this, I decided to take your first suggestion - easiest all around. Thanks!

The second solution is better since you seem to want to update styles.
