I know about -30- as a sentinel to an article, but I see "-58", "-828", "-718" and so on at the foot of some articles on Canada News Wire.

The numeric values don't correspond to word-counts or paragraph counts.

If any student of journalism is reading this I'd appreciate some comment.

That should be the age factor as to who might be interested in the article.
-30 is for under 30 years of age. -58 for under 58 years old, etc. The rarely read ones are the -828 or -718!

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

I don't even know what you mean by
-30- as a sentinel to an article
    What does that mean?

I think this is the minimum IQ level required to read a piece. Unfortunately, those articles requiring IQs of 828 or 728 have been written by Chris!
Didn't Garrison Keillor say something about "all the children being above average"?

Thank you for that gratuitous compliment!

    All:
    Mystery solved: (attached image).
My trawling program was obtaining a text form of each web page via an Excel VBA job.
The mystical number refers to the number of other web pages related to the corporate target.
Loot (sic!) Quebec has 1,665 news stories on CNW.
    Figures.

Thanks for wasting even more of my time than even I thought possible.

Golly - I'm glad you solved and explained the mystery! Now I can get on with my day without being tormented by this unsolved puzzle. Maybe another would good about now!
