I learned that the address book is called Contacts in Windows Live Mail (WLM) in another thread but I'm going to start a new thread for this. I can change the names and addresses in WLM contacts and now I want to find the actual file or folder so I can copy it as part of my regular backup. I have searched for "contacts" on the C: drive and about 15 items were found. One of them is C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Contacts but that folder does not seem to contain any contact info! It contains six *.dll files and wlcomm.exe (or a name similar to that). None of the other items in that search result seem to be related in any way to WLM. I used the WLM built-in mechanism to move the messages into a place I wanted them so they will be backed up easily and that worked fine and it did not move the contacts to the new location. There are about 120 names and addresses in this address list so there has to be a folder or file somewhere.

    1. Does WLM use a folder that contains a file for each addressee or does it use one file to hold all addresses?
    2. Where is this folder or file located on a system using Windows XP Pro?

BTW, I did not sign up for any kind of account online when I installed WLM. I was prompted for that info and I chose the path that did not require it.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Now that I have taken another look, the WLM contacts must be on the mail server, as on the machines that I am using WLM, there are not contacts listed under Users folders.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

    Look under C:\Users\user-name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts.

Joe, that is a Vista-style path. Windows XP does not have a file structure that looks like or similar to that -- e.g., no C:\User and no AppData anywhere. I have looked at all paths that seemed like possibilities on the C drive without any luck! I'll probably try a search of file contents over night and look for a particular email address that is in that Contacts list and see if that gets any results.

In the meantime, if anyone uses Windows Live Mail and actually does backup their Contacts on Win XP please tell me where the Contacts are actually located!

    Thanks,
    Bill

    The Windows XP equivalent of
    C:\Users\user-name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts.
    is
    C:\Documents and Settings\user-name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

You can simply export your Contacts list to back it up. There's a tutorial for that here and another tutorial to import the contacts list back into Live Mail here. HTH

I use an automated system to do my backups and I have always moved the mail files -- if the mail program provides that capability, which OE, Win Live Mail and Thunderbird do -- to a location I like and then had the backup process simply copy the files from that location each time. I'm currently looking for the location of the Contacts file(s) so I can add that location to the backup process.

Thanks for the liink to that article. It reminded me to backup the Account info which I will do by manually doing that export.

Yes, I have manually searched that whole path extensively and haven't found any files that might be the Contact info. There isn't any "Windows Live Contacts" folder under "Microsoft".

In fact, I even ran a search of the C: drive for any file whose contents contained one of the email addresses in the Contacts list and it found 26 email messages but no other files! So, I think that means the addresses are not stored as straightforward letters and numbers.

    Thanks,
    Bill
