I am using Word 2000 with Windows XP at present but have just sent away for the latest Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 which includes Word. Would it be okay to just install this new version or should I remove the old Word 2000? Are there any tips about doing this successfully?

The Office 2007 installer should detect previous versions and give you the choice to uninstall the older version or install side-by-side. If you don't see that option you could stop the 2007 install and then uninstall the older version from Control Panel | Add/remove Programs.

That's fine then. Would there be any advantage to installing them side by side? ie do the older documents configure correctly?

Word 2007 should handle your old documents just fine. Some people like to leave old software installed until they are comfortable that the new version is OK.

I did find some relatively minor problems with both Office 2000 and 2007 installed, particularly after updating either. The problem is that if later you want to remove Office 2000, you'll have to remove Office 2007 first, then remove Office 2000, then reinstall Office 2007. While this is relatively painless (your Office 2007 settings should all be retained), it does take a lot of time, particularly re-updating Office 2007. So unless you have a real need to retain any functionality of Office 2000, I'd suggest you remove it first.
