    Unhappy

I have a HP computer that has the COA attached to the case with a product key fro XP Pro.

Should I be able to load Windows XP Pro (using a genuine Mocrosoft OEM CD) onto the computer using the product key listed on the COA?

Original hard drive crashed and a new hard drive has been installed.

When I enter the key shown on the COA, I get the message "invalid number".

    Am I doing something wrong?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

How sure are you that the number on the case is a Microsoft license key for the OEM version of Windows XP Pro? Is the CD you are using definitely for the exact same product?

Do you have an HP recovery disk? If not then you may be able to obtain one from here.

The key on the COA is labeled as a product key.

Do not recall seeing a license key on the COA.

The CD that I am using is a OEM version not branded to any manufacturer.

I do not have a HP recovery disk.

I had already tried the HP website with no luck, that is the reason that I bought the XP Pro OEM CD.

The computer is a HP Vectra VL 420 which is several years old.

I would have expected this to work. I guess your only remaining option is to buy a retail copy of Windows XP Pro.

Given the small size of the lettering on the COA sticker, it is very easy to misread an O for a zero, etc. Use a magnifying glass to examine the sticker and try re-entering the string.

That is a very good suggestion. Last time I had to do this I didn't have a powerful enough magnifying glass, so I used my digital camera to take a picture of the label and then zoomed in using my image editing software.

Took another look at the product keys. There are not any letter o or zeros. Inasmuch as the computer is a HP, do you think that I will have to find a HP recovery CD to install the OS?

Nope. Does the HP have a Windows Product Key sticker on the side or back? If so, you can use a standard XP installation CD and that key to install XP. When the install completes, you may be missing some drivers, but you should be able to get them from the HP website. The critical one is the Ethernet card: once you have that driver installed and the HP can reach the Internet, you're able to download the rest of the drivers right to the HP.

No apology needed. Just pointing it out so the OP didn't get confused, since you had posted earlier in the thread to use a magnifying glass to read the COA.
