limit email downloads (Outlook 2000)

I want to get my emails through a satellite link at sea and consequently want to make sure I do not donwload junk. When I use Outlook it downloads everthing. I know I can set it to delete messagea from all but a specific group but it stills downloads then deletes. Can anyone suggest how to overcome this.

    Thank you

    Peter

use corp mode (or outlook 2002) and it's remote mail feature. outlook doesn't have the capability to actually filter mail before downloading or delete from server. remote mail lets you get headers and delete from server without downloading more than headers.

for quickie access to pop mail, i'd recommend a non-outlook solution - magic mail or eremove. both are fast pop clients and eremove lets you gets the first 100 lines. you can delete the junk, then use outlook to get what's left. it's faster than using outlook and remote mail, especially if you use outlook in internet only mode currently. sorry, i don't have urls handy for either program.

Thanks MJ. I assume corp mode is corporate mode accessed from options under Tools in Outlook. Help tells me I should use corp mode if I have a Lan, which I do not. Further it says if you use corp "Note If you change from the Internet Only option to the Corporate or Workgroup option, you will need to add Microsoft Exchange or another mail service to your profile. On the Tools menu, click Services, and then click Add." Only my Tools does not have a Services Option. Can you help please.

    don't believe everything help says

you must use corp mode if you connect to exchange, but it's not a requirement. you will lose some features in internet mode - like send using - and corp mode is slower.

if you want to try it, tools > options > mail services tab(name might be slightly different) > reconfigure mail support button.

I thought this sounded good: I use CW mode with a POP3 server. I changed my server connection from LAN to manual, restarted OL, and chose Tools, Remote, Connect. I experienced some consternation as the wizard churned through the 1900 messages in my Inbox with the message "deleting old headers." I don't think I lost anything, and it is an interesting way to work. Outgoing messages are held until I either use the Remote connect or hit F5, and I can choose either way to retrieve messages. This obviously will be more useful on the road, but for now, maybe it will get me through the morning junk mail faster.
