Has anyone updated to sp2 and did they have any problems? I keep getting messages about updating to sp2, but want to make sure there are no problems with it.

I've also installed SP-2 on several machines without any issues. Just to be safe, be sure to backup your machine before installing SP-2.

I also am wondering about Service Pack 2.
During the time that I loaded some updates, including SP2, on my wife's computer, the 32-bit IE 8 stopped working. Only her 64-bit IE 8 works (except on websites with flash). I thought it might be McAfee so I took that off and loaded a new Norton 360. Nope. I uninstalled IE8 and reinstalled it. Nope. I ran a registry clean from Norton 360 and it mentioned a key it deleted because of a missing file - "C:\windows\system32\RtPgEx64.dll." I tried googling that file. It seems to be part of the Realtek drivers. So I reloaded the ASUS motherboard drivers. Nope.
If it was loading Service Pack 2 or any other update on my wife's computer that ruined IE 8's 32-bit version, I don't want to load it on mine!
The only updates I have not loaded on my computer are: KB970653 and KB972036 and SP2. Can anyone tell me if these are safe to load?

Internet Explorer 32-bit is included in Vista 64-bit to overcome compatibility issues with some add-ons. Add-ons such as Flash don't have a 64-bit version, and the 32-bit browser is needed for that function. It's suppose to be there and is used as the default, as you have found.

You may want to try using Internet Explorer with no add-ons to see if something is preventing your connection to the Internet, as this is usually the only difference between the two browsers.

You can do that by clicking:
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No add-ons)

You also might want to check your firewall settings to see if something there is preventing the connection.

Speaking of sp2, I have not seen it show up yet on Windows Update. It's been out a while, so I assume it would have been offered by now. I remember that when sp1 was released, it wasn't offered until I had updated a certain driver. I haven't heard that this sort of thing was happening with sp2, so I'm wondering if it isn't on WU yet or if there might be some other reason it hasn't been offered. I am fairly up to date with security patches and other updates on WU, except for the .Net update (951847) that was released in January (I've seen articles advising people not to install this).

Vista SP-2 should be offered via Windows Update unless your system does not meet the prerequisites or your have hidden the update.

Do you meet the prerequisites listed at Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Vista SP2 Setup Prerequisites and Changelog My Digital Life?

Joe, thanks for this link. According to the article, there are two prerequisites for being offered sp2 on WU. You must have sp1 installed and you must have kb955430 installed. I do have sp1 installed, so that isn't the problem. As for the kb955430 patch, I can't find it in the update history, but on the other hand, it isn't in the available updates either. (And I have no hidden updates.) According to the article, it should be offered by WU. So that's another mystery. I could download the update separately, but it is strange that it's not on WU. After sp1, I'm a little reluctant to apply updates manually, because if it isn't on WU, then maybe my system isn't ready for it and it could mess something up. Any thoughts?

I thought I'd check back in, now that I have found a resolution to the missing Vista sp2 mystery. According to the link Joe posted, prerequesites to having Vista sp 2 offered in Windows Update are sp 1 and KB955430. I had installed sp 1 long ago, but 955430 was never offered. It turns out that there is also a prerequisite to 955430. I had never installed KB963707 (update to .Net3.5 service pack) After I installed that, 955430 was offered. Then, after I installed that, Vista sp2 was offered. At the moment (a very long moment) I am downloading sp2. So thanks again, Joe, for pointing me in the right direction.
