We have survey equipment that reads or interprets other equipment values. The equipment produces a CSV file of the data it reads. The produced CSV file is sometimes then brought into Excel. Some of the data in the CSV file is in the format 3-1 or 3-33. Excel interprets this data as dates giving Mar 1 or Mar 33.

Is there any way to prevent Excel converting this data to dates?

I'll assume you are using the import wizard; when using the wizard you can choose the format of the data being imported. If it is not selected it will assume it is General and convert it to a date, select Text as the format for that column it will not convert

Excel opens .csv files without displaying a wizard. It interprets the data automatically, which is not what you want here.

If you change the extension from .csv to .txt and open the file, Excel will display the Text Import Wizard, and you'll get the chance to specify how columns should be interpreted in Step 3 of the Wizard, as indicated by Jezza:

Thanks to both of you, Jezza and Hans.

Forcing the import wizard to run is the trick.
