Is there any way of changing the default footer font text to 8 pt size? Every time I think I have done this, it appears in normal size font and I have to select and reduce it. Many thanks.

The default size of the footer text is set by the Footer style.
If you want to set it for a particular document, modify the Footer style in that document - see How to Modify a Style in Word 2007.

If you want to set it for all new blank documents you create from now on, modify the Footer style in the Normal template - see Change the Normal template (Normal.dotm) for instructions.
