    Fixing the IE8 Black Bar Bug | Hardware Secrets shows how to recover from this issue. It is a work around not a permanent fix.

    I guess I've been lucky - I've been using IE8 on Windows XP SP3 since its official release and I've never encountered this bug. But it's good to know that there's a workaround if it ever occurs, so thanks!

    On the few XP machines I see these days, I've not encountered this either. Just ran across it had the same thought as you.
