My head quaters uses xl2007 this my data is in 2007 xlsm format because we have a million records, I would like to connect to it via xl 2003 an run a pivot tables using xl 2003 on this data. I tried this using odbc external data and new query and got an error that external tables is not in the expected format.

The ODBC driver for Excel only recognizes .xls files, not .xlsx or .xlsm files. Installing the Office 2007 compatibility pack doesn't help.

You should either get Excel 2007 yourself, or convince your headquarters to store the data in an Access database (in .mdb format, not in the new .accdb format) instead of in an Excel workbook.
