    PROBLEM

I have a problem i have just installed Win98SE clean install. Now when i go to access the internet it dials up no problem and connects at 44000 kps now thats ok, but its really really slow, the two little computers at bottom of the taskbar that say you are online flash every so often, when the flash data is coming thru. It has miny fits where loads of data comes thru then about 1 min where nothing comes thru. You cud say its the internet, but i had to dial up 6 times last night as it never sent any packets thru. Anyway just wondered if anyone knows what the problem is, i cud access it really really quick on Sunday but that was with Win95. ANy ideas, if its just as slow tonight gonna go bak to 95

    Re: PROBLEM

Demand on the internet of the past couple of days has, for obvious reasons, been extremely high. Your ISP's servers may be overloaded, or those of the site(s) you are trying to access.

If the problem persists, you could ask your telephone company to check the line for noise. The fact that you are showing a reasonable connection rate would suggest that the problem is with the internet.

thanks for that i thought this might be the case, just it dials in ok, but loss of connection halfway through. I thought it was maybe cos i had put win98, as i have had problems in past with Win98 being slow.

    Thanks for the reply

    Re: PROBLEM

when things return to a semblance of normality, if the problem is still persisting, one thing you might check is the maximum speed of your ports. I have seen Windoze set up so that the modem is trucking along ok at a good speed as you report but the port itself has a max of 9600 causing a bottleneck. Go into Control Panel, System, Ports and click on the one your modem is connected to. Check its properties and change the max speed to as fast as it will go. May not be the reason but its worth checking. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Re: PROBLEM

Hadn't thought of that. Will try to remember that one for the future. It's sad that the most expensive component of the average PC is the one that gives the most problems; and they wonder why people pirate it! I don't mind paying for things that work. Shame MS don't give the kind of gaurantee I'd expect from a toaster!
