    Hi Al,

May I jump in here as ask you a question about the attachment you posted showing the Computer Managment screen?

I'm wondering why you have Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator set to Manual and not started?

I checked my Services and I have it set to Automatic and Started. Could it be because you have a different OS? Should I change mine to be set up like yours?

The only dumb question is one not asked, right?

For an explanation of the RPC Locator service see the technical details section of Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-001.

You should be able to set it to manual without any problem.

Note: I split this from Post 796128 into a thread of its own so as not to hijack the original thread.

    Thanks Joe,

I read the Security bulletin you referred to, although it was published in 2003, I suppose it still applies. The technical details were a little too technical for almost brain dead me. In plain English is the Locator service to be stopped or enable, automatic or manual?

As for RPC I ask the same questions as above. A plain start or stop; enable or disable would tell me how to set them. A computer nerd I am not as you probably know.

NOTE: There are two similarly named services - RPC & RPC Locator.

Leave RPC alone. RPC Locator may be set to manual. Re-boot your system after the change. RPC Locator will not be started after the re-boot.

In addition to what Joe's already said. I should tell you that I know NOTHING about any of that stuff. Only when I checked my machine in response to the OP's problem did I see what they're all set to. My machine works OK and if yours does too, I'd say leave well enough alone, or set them the same way mine are set.

Thanks Joe, for your explanation of the difference between the two. Thanks to you too Big Al for the example of your settings. I will change mine to match yours.
