Originals

Hi Guys; in reading scuttlebutt recently I noticed that several of the funniest collections were headed up " More ..." , ie more one-liners, more puns, etc. Unfortunately I didn't discover this board until about a month ago so I missed all the original posts.

Is there any chance the someone could re-post the original collections for me? I'd love to see them! Or, if you don't want to clutter up the board with them since they've been there before, perhaps you could email them to me? Pretty please?

I'd really be very grateful!

Sorry, but I stopped getting the scuttlebut daily a long time ago and have even thrown out all the old ones - I know it's a cardinal sin, but I was desperate to reduce the size of my in box - hopefully someone will still be keeping them, though.

Hi Brooke:

I don't get the dailies on Scuttlebut, but, I do get them for several of the other boards. I use an Outlook Rule to automatically move them to other folder(s). This way they don't clutter up my inbox and I read them when I want to.

Sorry - should have said mailbox - it got to 2 gig and IS threw a wobbly. I can just about cope with rules -in outlook - but unfortunately we're blessed with Notes and whilst I'm sure it's easy to do, I've never had the inclination to do so!

Well, I thought that was quite large for a mailbox. Guess yours is just bigger than mine. Ho hum!

Actually, I find it huge.

I managed a large data centre at one time and just had a flash back to similar situations (sort of sitting in the IS guys shoes).

I did have to cope with mailbox bloat of my own however. The rules I ended up with (for my own safety) are:

1)Categorize and file mail ASAP.
2)Save and check attachments on receipt. Detach from mail message if I want to keep the original. Annotate save file name to identify source.
3)Regulary archive primary mail.

This keeps my PST (IMO) well under 200MB, and usually under 100MB.

The biggest saving came from aggressively policing attachments.

I'm with you on that one, but I also gained an awful lot of space from deleting my jokes folder. I now keep absolutely everything - move it into in a monthly folder once I've dealt with it and then when I create a new monthly folder I go through the one that's two months back and strip out as much as possible. As you say - ruthless is the way forward. I've been doing this for two or three months now and notes is a whole lot more stable these days. I'd still rather have outlook though!

Oh, yes: Beryl - sorry for hijacking the thread!

That's OK, Beryl. Just hang around long enough and most of them will get posted again by someone else. At least that *seems* to be the way it's working.

Re: Originals

Do you have an automated way to detach attachments and paste the name into the e-mail? I also save and detach all attachments.

I need to keep a record of the filename, and the process of detaching, saving and logging the filename is probably the most inefficient thing I do at work (except for time on the Internet anywhere outside the Lounge). Ornic Technologies has a rule-based automatic detacher which uses a default folder, but it doesn't appear to log the filename; but what I want is a button-click detach capability that lets me select the target folder, and automagically logs the filename to the e-mail.

Sorry. Nothing automated but it should be possible with VBA for Outlook.

Does VBA for OL = VBScript? I don't have the skill, nor any knowledge of VBS.

Re: Originals

Depends on the version of Outlook. Outlook 2000 was the first version to use VBA as its programming language, but you can use VBS in all the versions.

Re: Originals

The VBA to save the attachments of an open item to the file system and list the file names at the foot of the message body could look like the attached. You will notice that the .Save calls are commented out for testing purposes. You will want to see that it works in your set-up before uncommenting those lines.

I have not enabled Word as my mail editor, so I have not address how you would write this information in Word. Probably a lot easier than the OL editor, but different enough that I didn't code it. Give it a try...and put that check in the mail.
