Vista Home Premium (x64) on HD HDX. Messenger Live, FIrefox and Internet Explorer will not open. However, Chrome and Safari seem to open correctly. In messenger, tools/connect, log in gives "hosts" error but no "repair" box. Internet Explorer gives "stopped working", FIrefox nothing happens except spinning wheel.

Appears there is some internet connection problems unique to the non-functioning programs which does not effect the two browsers that are working...can't figure out what the problems might be...any ideas...?

I don't know about Chrome or Safari. Can you look to see if you have a HOSTS file and if yes, does it have some text like the following? The file is usually in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and is named simply HOSTS with no extension. You can open it with Notepad or whatever text editor you use. Here's what my "plain vanilla" one says:
    # Copyright 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

Thanks...this is the host file I am using now:

    127.0.0.1 localhost
    127.0.0.1 www.internetdownloadmanager.com
    127.0.0.1 internetdownloadmanager.com
    127.0.0.1 www.tonec.com
    127.0.0.1 tonec.com
    202.105.179.198 bbs.betabbs.com
    202.105.179.198 www.betabbs.com

What I can figure out is why Chrome and Safari can load web sites and Internet Explorer, Firefox and Messenger Live cannot. Is there something unique with the former two? Anyhow, I should have Windows 7 Upgrade next Monday/Tuesday and maybe the upgrade will fix the problem (I suspect not and I would like to get it fixed before the upgrade)....

If you can recommend any changes to the above host file, please do so and Thanks again...

First, I would recommend that you NOT upgrade until you resolve this issue. Why carry a problem over to a new OS installation ??

You might take a lok at this page for some insight into your Hosts file and some ideas about what to do in your situation.

This page is also a good resource for Hosts file information.

I'm checking out the host file info...in the meantime, when I boot to safe mode with internet all four browsers are working. Messenger still will not connect, but connection check not goes all the way though (still host file error that notes host file contains MSN related entries which may prevent connection, and cleanup functions but has not effect). Maybe someone has an idea what the problem might be that browsers are working in Safe mode but not in normal boot. Meantime, I'll work on my host file...
    thanks for the info..

Ping'd coolwebsearch.com on my hosts file and checked out o.k., then changed hosts file to an MSN plain vanilla. Booted in Safe mode and all four browsers are working but no joy still with Messenger (still get hosts file error when running connect checkout and will not repair)...I agree I shouldn't uprade to Windows 7 until I can find solution to the problem...BTW, I had a pre-release version of WIndows 7 installed with no problem, then restored a Norton Ghost Image for Vista with the current problem, and waiting to get a fix for Vista before upgrading to Windows 7 final...Thanks for the help...

If the browsers work in safe mode, that makes me think that something is loading (what we used to call TSRs) that's getting in the way. Are you up for trying a little test with MSCONFIG? Disable all or most of what's running at startup to see if you can find a culprit that way. I suggest MSCONFIG because I don't think you (yet) want to mess with "services" and such. Maybe something has been added recently that's hampering the browsers.

I have no experience with Messenger.
