    Hi,

With the attached file Iím trying to produce a bar chart comparing a budget vs. actual spend.

How can I have the actual spend like a thick red line running through the bar itself (the budget).

Would be nice to have a % indicator floating alongside.

    Is that possible with excel?

    Thanks.

I'd use a column chart instead of a bar chart.
Start by creating a column chart based on the data.
Then click once on the Actual series and change its chart type to a Line chart.

What percentage would you like to display? Actual as percentage of budget for each quarter?

    See the attached version: [attachment=86309:comparison-graph.xlsx]

I would suggest doing it similar to Hans, but to use the columns for the actual data and the line for the budget numbers. I have seen this convention more often in business charts.

Also, if you use a stacked column with the lines, you could then even include the actual spending in a column and some projected spending in a varying shade to display additional detail.

Thankyou very much to both of you for these excellent replies.

I have attached the updated one, but how can I add the percentage?

I use the free add-in XY Chart Labeler to add data labels from a range of cells.
If you install it in Excel 2007, it should appear in the Add-Ins tab of the ribbon.
