    CD Autorun

I am running WIn98SE and CDs no longer start automatically on insertion. I have verified that under System Properties/Device Manager, then Properties/Settings for my CD-ROM drive, that Auto Insert Notification is checked. Can anyone advise?

Thank you. This KB article is not very clear in its instructions and I am loathe to tamper with the registry so I guess I'll stick with running CDs from Windows Explorer.

    Hi
Not sure what it is that's unclear about the instructions in the MS KB article. All it says is scroll to a given key and change its value to 95.
Whilst it's true that a mistake in editing the Registry can be costly to correct, all you need do is this : when you are at the required Key, and before you make any changes, highlight it. Go to File, Export file. Give it a name, and it will save as 'name.reg'
If at a later time your editing causes a hitch, right click on the *.reg file you just saved and choose Merge. This will restore whatever keys you had highlighted to their condidtion at the time of saving.

    MerC...top notch response.
I've never read or heard that way to back-up the registry.
Checking the Lounge is a learning experience for me.

    Re: CD Autorun

    Hi
This method seems to work fine in Win 98 (even for the whole Registry). However, it won't work for the whole Registry in Win 2000. Just thought I'd better mention that.
In Win 2kP, I believe you can only Restore the Registry (other than by re-installing the OS) by using the ERD or Boot Diskettes. If you ever need instructions on how to do this, pop over to my web site and grab the 'Cleanboot' doc/PDF.
