    Hi,

I am using Word 2007. When typing in a document, I frequently get the following error message:

"Microsoft Office Word can't open the thesaurus.
Microsoft Office Word cannot install the necessary files due to Windows Installer error 1605.
This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."

Accompanying the error message is the opening of the Research pane.

I do not know what causes the error. Any help you can give me to prevent this error from occurring will be appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Try this:
    • Quit Word.
    • Select Start | Control Panel.
    • Open Add or Remove Programs.
    • Scroll down to Microsoft Office 2007 and select it.
    • Click Change.
    • When the installer appears, click Add or Remove Features, then click Continue.
    • Expand Office Shared Features.
    • Expand Proofing Tools.
    • Make sure that everything is set to Run from this computer or similar.
    • When done, click Continue.
    • You may need to provide your Office CD.
If that doesn't help, try MSKB article You receive a Windows Installer Error 1605 error message when you start Word 2003. Although it is for Word 2003, it should apply to Word 2007 too.

Thank you very much, HansV. I followed your instructions and ilmmediately got a message stating that the Microsoft Office 2007 setup was corrupted and that I should reinstall Office 2007. I did so, and I am hoping that the problem is fixed now. If not, I will following your instructions.

Best regards and a Happy Thanksgiving.

    HansV,

The Windows Installer Error 1605 continued after I reinstalled Office 2007. So I followed through on your instructions. I think the error was that "everytthing was not set to Run from this computer or similar," I fixed that problem, clicked Continue, Office 2007 reconfigured successfully. Again, thank you for your help.
