While managing my thread subscriptions I noticed that it said

Subscription auto pruning is switched off at present
What is that, and how would I switch it on if I wanted to?

It's not something that you or I can set.

The support admins could specify that you're automatically unsubscribed from subscribed threads after a certain period of time, say 30 days. This feature is not turned on at the moment - that's the meaning of the message.

That message does seem confusing. The lack of auto-pruning would also result in an enormous store of notification requests with no purpose. These requests would live forever, periodically "waking up" to see if new posts had been made.

Because the line implied that there was something Loungers could change, but there was nothing users could change, we gave this function a cleansing purpose and described it better. You should now see that the line reads:

To conserve resources, a notification request is pruned 90 days after a thread has its last reply.

    Thanks for reporting this.

I didn't really think about the consequences of this change... I have used the thread "notification" feature as a personal bookmarks list for Lounge posts (type set to No Email). That isn't going to work any more, is it? I don't know how often the pruning will occur, but I will have to remember to bookmark the threads in my browser.
