I am even unable to install the microsoft clean up utility because it is looking for an .msi file in a folder that does not exist.

If you want someone to help you then you will have to provide much more information.

What is "the microsoft clean up utility" that you are trying to install?
What .msi file is it looking for?
What folder is it looking in?

    Welcome to the Lounge.

You should not have to install the Cleanup Utility on an XP system. It should be installed with the operating system. There are several ways to start the utility.....

You can start Disk Cleanup, by doing any of the following:
    • Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type cleanmgr, and then click OK.

      -or-
    • Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.

      -or-
    • In Windows Explorer or My Computer, right-click the disk in which you want to free up space, click Properties, click the General tab, and then click Disk Cleanup.
    HTH.

The possible problem here Doc, is that we don't know if he's trying to cleanup a drive (your solution) or having installation troubles for which the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility is provided by MS, with dire WARNINGS I might add. I guess we'll have to wait to see if more info is forthcoming...

Another possibility (ambiguous) is the "nasty" file remover in WU!
