I was wondering...is it completely safe to have both Open Office and the Microsoft Office software installed on your computer?

You can have both installed. You can choose to associate the MS Office file formats with either MS Office or OpenOffice, it is an option of the OpenOffice installer to change the file associations to OpenOffice.

If you need to you can also set up OpenOffice to use MS formats as the default, but only the pre-2007 formats - not docx or xlsx. At this point, OpenOffice is read-only for the newer formats.

The downside is that the old Office formats produce much bigger files than the default OpenOffice 3 or Office 2007 formats.
