I see Windows has a utility to burn an ISO to a disk, and I use Alex Feinman's ISO recorder 3.1 to create new ISO files. So far I have not found a way to mount an image. Anyone got a utility, or have I missed one in Windows?

I have been using Virtual Clone Drive available at slysoft.com. I like Daemon Tools (at filehippo) better, but it is not ready for Windows 7 yet, IMO. Both are free.

Thanks, I'll take a look at slysoft, though I was hoping for freeware. I've heard more than once that daemon had an adware (or some kind of malware) problem.

I went to their site and got the impression it had to be registered in a month. Will it still work after that period?

No, the program is totally free. I use this program also and it works great.

Also worth mentioning is that iso files can be opened with applications like 7-Zip and IZarc and any content extracted. Also, if your iso is a DVD movie, programs like VLC can play the movie directly from the iso file without having to mount it.

I use Daemon tools. What are you trying to accomplish though? At times I also (at a slower speed), copy all contents of the ISO opened in 7-Zip to a USB flash drive. Reason I do this is for some netbooks that I deal with which do not have optical drives and installing Daemon tools is not permitted by the customer. It works like a charm! I can install and in most cases the program is happy. This of course, would not work if the program is a game and has copy protection in which only way Daemon tools or Alcohol 120% would be one of the few ways to keep the protection technology in place (remember, backup purposes only for this kind of stuff).

Thanks for all the replies, this place is really lighting up.

As for what I'm trying to do, Timothy, I am only tinkering. This is my home desktop computer and I use it for writing, banking, music and movies. Mostly I just play with it; tuning, experimenting, etc., sort of like if I still had a hotrod in the garage, but the computer is cheaper and draws less blood. As for mounting an ISO, I probably would only watch a movie or something. It's just something I wanted to be able to do more than something I needed to do. So compared to you IT people, I'm just an amateur tinkerer.

Interesting, my configuration had problems with Daemon, messed up my screen and would not uninstall. Same thing with Online Armor, which just totally screwed up my new install. Good thing I followed Fred Langa's "reload apps" article, I had images at every major install point so recovery was not a problem. A number of the articles in this forum section seem to indicate that while Windows 7 is very solid upon release (versus Vista) there are still incompatibilities, both hardware and software. I will have to check out the Daemon forum to see if my problem is common. Maybe it was a part of the Online Armor problem, I do not remember if they were at a common point.

I use Virtual Clone Drive and ImgBurn. Both are free and work great with Windows 7. No problems at all.
