I am working on German grammar fill-in exercise. The task for the students is to put the correct endings on words; the stem of the word is written, followed by a long space (which is found in Insert->Symbol->Special Characters). This long space is to be underlined.

All this is honky-dory, except when the long space is at the end of a line (normal text wrap), where the underline disappears. The underline will appear again if the line is wrapped differently, by adding text before, or decreasing/increasing text size and so on. This, however is not an option, as there are strict requirements to paragraph formatting, typeface, text size etc.

I wonder if this is a normal behavior of Word?
I would appreaciate if there is a clever helper out there that knows of a workaround.

    I am using Word 2002.

By default, Word does not underline spaces at the end of a line.
    Select Tools | Options...
    Activate the Compatibility tab.
Scroll down to the option "Underline trailing spaces".
Tick its check box, then click OK.

(This is a document-level setting, it won't affect other documents)

    Hi HansV

    Thank you a zilliion

That is exactly what I need.

I must say, what a great place to ask for help. Couldn't even spend an hour having a start-the-week-end beer with my neighbour before a solution came in.

    Here is one to you
