I have Windows 7 Home Premium and everytime I shut down for the night a box pops up that Windows is waiting for a program to close.

What is it and how can I fix Windows to stop doing this?

Isn't the program identified? Does it go away and continue the shutdown?

Check out the event viewer and see if you can identify the program that is hanging. It could be under the system or the application sections and might be categorized as a error or an information message. So you basically need to look at each logged event as your system does a shutdown. Also, like Joe said, you did not say if the system eventually shutdowns by itself or if you have to do a hard shutdown, this is important because a hard stop may not log the event that is causing the system to hang.

I wonder if it would help if you open Task Manager just before you try to shut down? Maybe you can spot in the list of processes what Win 7 is struggling with or waiting for. I admit I've never tried it at shutdown but I will now to see what it does.

Have you thought of hiberanting instead of going for a complete shutdown?

Is there a process that is taking up a substantial amount of your RAM?

Could it be an anti-virus program?

If that is an event viewer entry, go to details and choose xml view. This might give you the name of the program.
