Entries in 'Search-File/Folders'

I need to know how to get rid of all the entries when using the 'Search-File/Folders' section in WinME.
These are located in the 'dropdown' box that you type whatever file/folder you are looking for.
Daughter has many items, including typed incorrect names. Her 'delete' key or even right click delete won't work on this.

I'm guessing that this would be controled by the AutoComplete setting in Internet Options>Content. You can clear the remembered data for forms, but you would lose them for every form. May not be a problem, unless you fill in a lot of forms!

Sparky...this isn't about filling in forms, etc...this is for the section in 'Search-files/folders'...where you type in when you are looking for a program or .exe or whatever...unless AutoComplete controls everything.

I've just reloaded my WinME system (don't ask...long story), and I've attempted to search for a few items, but I can't get the "dropdown" to appear.

Has your daughter turned on (or off) a toggle that would cause this?

Don't really know what she has done...I do know that sometimes her AutoComplete works, and other times it doesn't ...her WinME is really messed up now...can't figure it out - she has been getting quite a few MSGRV32./BSOD - all random. I did a re-install over WinME today for her...all was ok for 2 hrs...then it started up again ...I think I may have to do a re-format soon for her...*dreading the thought and shuddering* - she had upgraded from 98SE in Oct/Nov!...I just wonder if she should go back to 98SE instead. She started to have major problems with computer ever since she got connected to 'net this June...I really don't know what to do with her computer.
If I have to do a re-format, is there a simple, easy way of doing it? She has backed-up (CD-R) all of her stuff (photos..actually, the entire OS, she says).
Any suggestions...hints...comments...anyone?

NOT a 'dropdown box', but where you place cursor and type a 'letter' it fills in using that 1st letter and you choose from listing of previously typed-in words....I was thinking it was like 'History' (etc), but it is a solid box only...sorry *going into corner, sucking thumb*

DANG!!!...doing an 'edit'...just noticed that the first line is screwed up...now what is wrong????? grrrrrrrrrr

Sorry, me not being clear . The IE AutoComplete controls the autocomplete in Explorer, I think. The search field will fall into the definition of a form, unless I am much mistaken, so clearing forms will erase all the bad entries, Unfortunately, it will erase all of the good ones as well. Don't know of any way to edit the entries. I guess the first step would be knowing where they are stored.

Re: Entries in 'Search-File/Folders'

I have a feeling they'd be stored in the registry. I'm at work right now, so I can't check on my ME computer. I'll check tonight when I get home.

Sparky...don't ...not your fault.
I am afraid to even touch anything in daughter's computer now...so many things are doing
things now. I think her main problem (other than WinME ) is something is wrong internally with her HP Pavilion! ...even to the point where I will take her computer to my house, connect it to my cable modem and see if I get the same results ( ???)...if it does the same thing, then I know it isn't the cable modem, but either her WinME or the HP itself (big choice). I even emailed HP tech support for help - described everything that was going wrong with her computer/WinME BSOD,errors, etc - maybe they will reply by Friday
Thanks for your reply.

Chris, my friend, old pal ...I am waiting with breath being held in...seriously, I am waiting for you to get home and play with WinME....and if you would be so kind as to PM re your problems with WinME ( ),I would love to compare notes...up to you, of course.

Now if I could only find somebody that knew about scanners-UMAX Astra2000P( )

Thanks

I have an HP Vectra myself and have usually found them pretty good at providing support; but at the moment, who knows? This is maybe one time when a little patience with helplines is justified.

Re: Entries in 'Search-File/Folders'

Sparky...during the day, I am at daughter's house and using her computer...my patience with her machine is almost nil . I have an eMachines with more MHz (633)/hers=500MHz...but she has more RAM, but her machine is so goofy, that I just want to get it fixed - as in RIGHT NOW!!!!I guess I will just have to wait for HP to email back this week with info (I HOPE). But I think I will also just take her tower to my house and connect it to my cable modem (same as hers) and see if there is anything different.
Gawd, I wish these computers could just be fixed from 1 end (user) to the mfr (tech) via the 'net!, then if it wasn't the machine, could then figure out the problem is with the OS *dreaming again*
Thanks, Sparky for encouragement....got a drink handy too???

Re: Entries in 'Search-File/Folders'

Hey there Lonnie... Sorry about the delay in responding... I got home and discovered I had to do about a million other things that my girlfriend thought was more important.

I think I've found the correct location in the registry. As always, back up the registry BEFORE making any changes.

Find this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerExplorer Bars{C4EE31F3-4768-11D2-BE5C-00A0C9A83DA1}FilesNamedMRU and delete all the entries you DO NOT WANT TO APPEAR. You'll notice that these entries are numbered, eg. 001, 002, 003, etc. I renumbered the remaining entries, to start at 001. Close the registry editor, and voila... a cleaner (or empty) autocomplete list (at least for the Find Files).

Hope this helps you out!

Re: Entries in 'Search-File/Folders'

Chris...it worked! Thank you, thank you so very much. ...now I can do my registry when I get home also.
Another question - pertains to same area in Registry:
also listed are the following 'codes'
EFA24E61(62)(64)-B078-11D0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E
the (62 & 64) are exactly the same as 61 ending...any idea what these are?
Again, thank you for your help.

Re: Entries in 'Search-File/Folders'

That's beyond me. I'm just a novice in the registry. I pickup hints here and there, and apply them as required. I couldn't tell you what all those cryptic keys are....

Hopefully, somebody else here will be able to help with your question...

Re: Entries in 'Search-File/Folders'

Chris...that's ok...I have always wondered about different entries that show up with just letters and numbers only - no 'true' names at all...geesh...computers are supposed to be 'human friendly'
I was just at the HP support section...trying to figure out stuff...what a 'run-around' - they use language that doesn't explain what they are talking about...went looking for BIOS data=came up with 'brio'...whatever that is!?! They don't have BIOS updates for WinME, but they do for 98SE....98SE is what was installed, but she upgraded to WinME...I got the funny feeling she will be going back to 98SE.
I got email reply from HP TechSupport re her problems with WinME...they said "clean out cache, history, reboot".! They didn't even answer the part about all the other problems that may be connected to everything else! Well, I emailed them back stating to re-read the original email stating all the problems and to have someone reply to entire email with a better answer than just a 'stock' reply solution.
I'll even pay a shop to check out the stupid machine if HP doesn't give proper response

Again, thank you for your help
