    Hi

I'm trying to use COUNTIF to reference a table in another file, but I get an error message. It's ok when the linked file is open, but if closed I get the error message. Can you not use COUNTIF on other files? Or is there a way round it?

    Thanks, Laurie

COUNTIF doesn't work with external references to closed workbooks, but you can replace a formula of type

    =COUNTIF(external_reference,value)

    with

    =SUMPRODUCT(--(external_reference=value))

This will work even if the external reference is to a closed workbook.

Thanks Hans, I need to look into this, but I will give it a go.
