    Hello,

If you are familiar with Microsoft Windows Media Player,
then you will know that it can retrieve title names and album
art just by inserting a CD and being connected to the internet.
I have a lot of mp3 files that are not named properly and do not contain any ID3 info.
I was wondering if there is a program that you could insert an mp3 file into it; for example:
    song.mp3
have the program scan the file and retrieve all the info on it,
and then automatically change the name from song.mp3 to:
    Stairway to Heaven.mp3
or whatever the program finds out the song actually is.

I can't help but think that this technology already exists.
This would be awesome if it can be done. Can someone help me out on this?

    Thanks.

I've never tried it, but Mp3tag - the universal Tag Editor seems to say it can do what you want, but be CAREFUL! I use it to manually edit a lot of old stuff I've had around for a long time, but I've never tried to have it search the web for me.

Thanks, but as you said be careful.
When using the web search option
I get results that have nothing to do with the file.
And this won't work unless the file has some ID3 info.

Thanks though, I appreciate any input on this.

I'm not sure this one does what you want, but take a look at it just 'cause it's FREE. http://download.cnet.com/Mp3-Tag-Too...-10073195.html

This one isn't free, but I'm pretty sure it is what you want. http://www.softpointer.com/tr_help/0...ing_freedb.htm

Thanks to another great suggestion, but still doesn't do what I need.

That is the same program you suggested before.

I understand what I am asking for probably doesn't exist.
At least it looks that way for now.
That is why I figured I would ask you guys,
because in the past the Lounge has helped me with just about anything.

    Anyway, don't go crazy looking.
Because the software you have found for me is great.
Even though I still have input the info in myself.

Thanks, and I would highly recommend:
Tag&Rename - music files tag editor
    which can be found at:

I'd be interested to know if this does what you are asking for
    Magic MP3 Tagger
It uses the Music Brainz database

Wow, that is great. Thanks Gfamily. The only thing it doesn't do is correct the name of the file.
If the file has just about any kind of ID3 tag info, then this program will find and apply the missing
ID3 tag info for you. Plus after doing that, if you then open the file in Windows Media Player,
you will also get the album art thumbnail for the files folder.
Even thought this program doesn't do exactly what I asked, It does a lot more than I hoped for.
I have to change my last recommendation to:
    MusicBrainz Picard 0.11

Odd that, MP3 Tagger allowed me to rename 5 tracks at a time, with a 'count to 10' delay each time.

Presumably, paying for the full product would allow you to do more at a time without the delays.

I ended up using the program that you mentioned in the previous post.
Not MP3 Tagger, but MusicBrainz Picard. I gave the link to it in my last post.

Actually, the program I mentioned was Magic MP3 tagger, My reference included the fact that it uses the Music Brainz database, but I've no experience of the MusicBrainz Picard software itself.

    Oh, I see.
I found MusicBrainz Picard to be pretty easy to use.
Give it a try and tell me what you think.
