There are hundreds of MEC000xx files in the TEMP folder of my wife's computer [running Windows XP]. Each one's name is MEC000 followed by two letters or a letter and a number. What are these files? What purpose do they serve? Can they be deleted without any impact on the system?

I'm Googling as I write as well as searching my XP drive... (Nope, none on my drive, although that doesn't "prove" anything.)

Under ordinary circumstances, ANY files in a folder called Temp can be deleted, but it would be nice to know what they are caused by...

Googling so far yields LOTS of hits having to do with the general subject of motorcycling. Are you "into" biking by any chance?

What are the file extensions? Will determine file type.

TEMP is temporary. You can delete all that it will allow you to dump. A few MAY be in use on that particular day and it will say so.

WHERE they are coming form is another question. Ask your wife? There must be some unique site or program that she uses and you don't.

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

Thanks to all who responded to my inquiry about MEC000 files. You've convinced me that it's probably OK to delete them. Just to be safe, however, I will move them to another drive for a while to make sure that they are not performing any essential function.
