I have been trying to install Windows update KB 974417 (a patch for .net Framework 2, 3, 3.5 and several iterations of 3) for longer than I care to admit. Windows downloads the updates and I install them but this one will always fail to install. I also found new directories with long alpha numeric names on my C:/ drive. I think the issue may be caused by the missing .net Framework 2. I only have version # 1, 3, 3.5 and several interations of 3. I tried to download .net Framework 2 but have been unable to do so..
I am running XP professional SP-3 on a Compaq Presario 6000 desktop purchased several years ago.

A long while ago, I had a very similar problem (although admittedly, it might not have been exactly the same), the fact remains that I could not install the .NET Framework 2.0 at all without it throwing an error at me.

The solution that worked for me was this. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en and download the tool, and then install the tool.

Once the tool has been installed, use the following: -

    cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

Copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .cmd file (not as a txt.cmd file!)

Once you have done this, double click on the file that has just been created and watch the fireworks. Great to watch (Really!)

One more (Important) point - please run the above as an Administrator, or as a user that has Administrative priveledges, or it will not work.

I cannot state how many times that this has saved me from having to completely re-build a PC / Laptop, so I am hoping that this will solve your problem - please let me know!

I have also remembered that if .NET framework 2.0 has been installed on your system previously (and then uninstalled for whatever reason), you might want to run the .NET 2.0 Cleanup Tool from here: -

Then run the above. This might also be of use. Very best of luck.

I've been having update failures for several months. Everything seems to be going fine until the end when I get this:

These are all the updates that were ready to install. In other words, it churned for 10 minutes and did nothing. I noticed that .Net 2.0 was included for updating but so were a lot of other things. Any opinions about this? Does this qualify for the MS Help referred to above?

I've seen no problems in day-to-day operation that I can relate to these updates but one never knows...
BTW, my system is XP Pro SP3. This could explain part of the problem but if the updates don't apply, why does it keep trying to install them?

    Puzzled and frustrated...
