Re: Control (?) Keys Not Working (2000 SR-1)

You may want to verify that the keystrokes have been assigned. Check Tools/Customize and then click the Keyboard button. Check a couple of the commands she is trying to do from the keyboard to see if keystrokes are even assigned.

Re: Control (?) Keys Not Working (2000 SR-1)

I had her check - the only one I had her check was F12 (save as). Scrolling down, F12 was the shortcut; however, she closed out of customize window, I told her to do F12. She got the following:

"MS Word cannot display help. This feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install now."

I then verified with her - a complete install has been done twice on her machine - but keys are still not working.

    Any other suggestions?

Sounds like the problem is not within Word. Maybe check the Keyboard icon in the Windows Control Panel to see if anything seems strange. On the Hardware tab there is a troubleshooter that may point you in the right direction.

You may also want to post this on the Windows board.

Check - believe it or not - the language settings and make sure 'detect language automatically is not selected'. Set your default to English (U.S.) or whatever you use.

I had her open excel - F7 and F12 both work in there.

I'll have her check language - and unless you get a BIG thanks from me, any other suggestions are more than welcome.

Detect language is grayed out - not an option.

What was I thinking! Obviously I read your message in haste - I was thinking of Ctrl+z etc. and previous answers re checking to ensure not assigned elsewhere would be the place to check that.
Did you check Tools, Customize, click on show function keys? I'm on Word97 here at home so not positive but think that's the right place to look. I think it has it's own toolbar but not positive.

Re: Control (?) Keys Not Working (2000 SR-1)

    Patricia -

I checked the show function keys on my machine - just displayed them at the bottom of my screen. In doing a search for "function keys" in help, I realized they are function keys, not control keys.

Still looking for a solution ...

    Hi Leanne,

First, does the File/Save As function correctly? If not then perhaps a macro is intercepting the FileSaveAs command.

Take a look under Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there any loaded. If so they are located your WordStartup folder. If more than one, move them one at a time until you determine which one is causing the problem. The location of the WordStartup folder can be found under Tools/Options/File Locations.

Also, Word 2000 can have COM add-ins, those that are added in via the Registry rather than the WordStartup folder. To determine this, add the COM Add-In command to your toolbar.

    - Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
    - On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
    - Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
    - Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

For more information on COM Add-Ins, see this article:

    Following up on BAM's instructions...

You don't have to move the Add-In files. Just uncheck them in the Templates and Add-Ins dialog. Start out by unchecking them all and then close the dialog box and try your function keys. If they work, then one of them is your problem; if they still don't work a .dot add-in is not your problem, just check them all again.

Re: Control (?) Keys Not Working (2000 SR-1)

What happens if she selects Help under the Help menu? Does she get the same message?

It sounds as if F12 has been reassigned to Help on her machine.

One other thought, what kind of computer system and keyboard does she have? A number of keyboards out there are programmable, and you can program them by mistake! It doesn't sound like this is the problem, but it pays to turn over all of the rocks when looking for such a persistent pest.

    Function Keys Don't Work (2000 SR-1)

There is a person is one of our offices whose Control keys (F1-F12) are not working. She said that Word has been re-installed and they are still not working.

Any suggestions I could give her? No Word Perfect help options checked. I'm not sure where else to look.

    Thanks,
    Leanne

Re: Control (?) Keys Not Working (2000 SR-1)

    Hi -
I had the person check templates and addins - no global templates added. No COM add-ins either.

If the person selects Help on the Help menu, that works. However, if she presses F1, she gets "MS Word Cannot Display Help. This feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install now?" <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

I asked her to have the person that did "complete" install twice to reinstall the help only, if that is possible.

<<You don't have to move the Add-In files. Just uncheck them in the Templates and Add-Ins dialog>>

Just a quick note to explain why I suggest moving the templates rather than unchecking them. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Depending on the template, unchecking it may not completely disable the functionality the template added. Some templates/add-ins load info into memory that doesn't get released until Word restarts. So by exiting Word, moving the templateadd-in, then restarting Word you have a 98% guarantee that the template/add-in is not the problem.

I also recommend moving the template instead of renaming because depending on what you change the name to Word may still load it. (I realize you didn
