I'm running Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron M1330. When trying to update to SP2 (KB948465) the error message "Code 490 Windows Update encountered an unknown error" appears. All troubleshooting tips have been done to no avail. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

SP-1 is a prerequisite for SP -2. Do you already have SP-1 installed?

I've had good luck installing service packs by downloading the full install package. See How to obtain the latest Windows Vista service pack for links to the various packages.

Have you tried running Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2?

best to install the full Vista SP2 package since I haven't had any problems installing it. I've done that last month on my cousin's HP laptop with pre-installed Vista Home Premium (updated first to SP1 level, then installed SP2) and also updated several drivers and Vista SP2 works great.
