Re: Asus A7V MB and RAM

There is a specific problem with VCache and large memory W98 systems. Also potential problems with ATI video cards.

This info on memory for your motherboard from crucial.com could be useful (see attachment). I assume all DIMM's are definitely PC133?

    Asus A7V MB and RAM

Edited by TonyH on 19-Sep-01 22:10.
I have an A7V with 900 Mhz Athalon and 512 Mb PC133 SDRAMM (2*256 Dimms). As I intended to do some heavy musical recording and editing and memory was cheap I thought I would fill the remaining slot with another 256 M Dimm. From that moment on I started to get irregular performance and a dialogue box appearing telling me I was low on resources and to close some programs. This happened particularly when trying to install software. I removed the new chip and problems ceased. I tried this Dimm in another computer and it worked fine. Does anyone know if the A7V has problems if all Dimm slots are full? The ASUS web site says that it should be OK. I'm able to work with what I've got but I don't like unsolved mysteries! I forgot to mention that my OS is Win98SE.

Thanks ileacy, this looks suspiciously like the problem. I will try the workarounds suggested by the MS support article and see what happens.

Thanks for your info. The problem was definitely a vcache problem and I have been able to rectify it. BTW the DIMM's were all PC133.

I believe in always asking the obvious questions first! There's a risk of sounding patronising, but even an expert sometimes overlooks the simple solution ! Glad to know all is sorted, anyhow.
