Here's something I haven't heard or seen mentioned since I installed Windows XP.

Is any one with WinXP using the Microsft Update Catalog? I found the site but it wanted me to install an add-on called Windows Update v7.

I don't know if it's compatible with my OS.

    Appreciate any comments.

From the FAQ for the Windows Update Catalog:

    What is Microsoft Update Catalog?
It's a service from Microsoft that provides a listing of updates that can be distributed over a corporate network.
    (...)
The Microsoft Update Catalog provides updates, including drivers, that are for distribution across a corporate network. For non-corporate scenarios, we recommend you use automatic updating or the Microsoft Update website.
Are you a managing a corporate network? If not, I'd leave Windows Update Catalog alone.

The update catalog is handy if you run into an update that for some reason won't install through Windows Update. The update can be downloaded to your hard drive and run from there, which quite often will work. I've used it a number of times with good success.
Create a fresh drive image before making system changes, in case you need to start over!

    No Hans,

I'm not managing a corporate network or any thing else like it. I'm just a poor user of a computer looking for answers to my questions.

Your advice is well taken and the Catalog will not be used.

Thanks also to bbearren, if I ever find myself in a situation like not being able to install an update,
then I'll remember to use the catalog.
