Between today and December 31 2009, SoftMaker gives away full versions of SoftMaker Office 2008 for Windows – permanently usable and upgradable to future versions.

But there is more: For every download on www.loadandhelp.com, SoftMaker donates € 0.10 (ten Euro Cents) to charity and development projects worldwide on www.betterplace.org.

See SoftMaker : Homepage for details.

So here's the upshot of it all:

The "Load and Help" campaign 2009 ended on December 31, 2009. We are
amazed that a whopping 60,890 people took up on this opportunity to get
our office suite for free, and we welcome them in the family of SoftMaker
    Office users.

60,890 downloads also means that SoftMaker donated 6,089 Euros (ten Euro
cents per download) to charity and development projects around the globe.
Isn't that a great thing? Getting something for free and doing good at
    the same time!

Here is an overview of the development projects that were completed through SoftMaker's donations.

We thank all participants and want to send a very big "thank you" to all
who passed the message about Load and Help along!

I ran the program yesterday to do a little word processing project and got a notice that an update was available. When I "processed" it, I got an update to the 2010 product and my 2008 said that ain't no good. So I guess what you got is what you keep. I haven't investigated pricing to upgrade to the 2010 version. I think I'll stick with Open Office for awhile...

I'd imagine, from the "spirit" of the giveaway, that the intention was not to provide a free upgrade to the most recent version.

Oh yeah, I heartily agree with that Alan. I wasn't bemoaning not getting 2010 for free. I just wondered why the software prompted me to go get that patch if it really wasn't a 2008 patch. I guess the software doesn't "know" the difference between the two - until you "accidently" try to install it. Anyway, my comment wasn't intended as bad mouth, just surprise.

Sorry Al... when you said "update" I thought you meant to the new 2010 version. My guess is that there would be no further updates available for (that final edition of) 2008 anyway. As you suggest, it's probably an oversight by SoftMaker.
