I have heard that it is difficult if not impossible to run older DOS programs in a DOS box under Win7-32 and probably completely impossible under Win7-64.

Would it be possible to run those programs and any other older software in a virtual environment such as VMware, MS Virtual PC or SUN's Virtual Box?

    Regards, Teunis

I have installed DOSBox-0.72 under Windows 7 64 bit and I run lots of old DOS programs in this environment.

Tha's good news. Does it allow to run DOS programs in "full screen" mode (something that's not available in a standard Vista DOS box)?

No, but it runs programs that think they are running in full screen mode. The programs seem to run quite happily.

I also use DOSBox within Win 7 64-bit without issue. I use it to play old DOS-based games.

I use Win 7 Pro's Virtual XP mode and run a lot of legacy programs with no problems.
    No full screen there either.
The only programs it doesn't like are some old utilities (Norton) that directly access hardware.
It also enables running old 16bit programs not compatible with 64 bit Win 7, and access them via Win 7 shortcuts. There's a delay the first time the Virtual machine starts up, but other than that very quick.

    Jock,

Thanks for this info. I run Windows HP so no virtual XP available. When eventually needed I'll go for Stuart's solution, because apparently that solves my full screen problem.

I also use DosBox 0.73 and run an old 16 bit 123 spreadsheet program.
No problems.Runs in full screen mode. Great.
    Windows 7 64 bit.
