MSBACKUP-HELP!!!

Daughter did a backup on cd-r (of entire stuff in computer-everything, she says), in anticipation of either doing a reformat of WinME or going back to 98SE(factory-installed). Problem=how do we see what is actually on the cd-r? Or can that be done? I have never done a backup of anything on my computer (I use floppies for what I have--not much) and I don't have msbackup on my computer either, so I don't know how to use the program at all...daughter has never checked to 'see' what is on her other 2 cd-rs she has made before...just let the computer and backup program run during night and that was that.
If she does go back to 98SE - what should she backup from WinME - my docs stuff, photo albums...anything else?
Does my post make any sense? Am I confusing anyone else besides me?
Really need help - and soon - on this, cuz this OS is giving daughter and myself fits with all the BSOD/freeze-ups,etc etc.
TIA

Re: MSBACKUP-HELP!!!

For peace of mind, just make copies to your CD - at least you can read and verify them.
Backups will be compressed and you are dependent on the back-up software to de-compress them when you want a restore. I have no experience of using MS backup software so can not comment on its efficacy, and would not know if the backup software between operating systems was compatible.
If space is a problem, use something easy to use like WinZip or PowerDesk to create zip files.
Personally, I would only backup data - documents, photo's, music, pst/pab files, whatever. You would be dicing with the unknown to start copying program files.

Re: MSBACKUP-HELP!!!

Leif, thank you. Since I can't figure heads or tails out of msbackup...I don't know what to do...I can't even figure out how to 'read and verify'...that is the problem...HOW?
I guess she will have to go to each 'photo album',etc and copy them onto cd..I don't know...I have used my cd-rw 7 times..only for burning cds, nothing else...whatever.
Zip-forget it..even worse trouble...
That's why I don't put anything worth keeping in my computer - too much hassle (93% free space).
Everything I need to keep is on 7 floppies (yup!)
Thanks anyway for your help.

Re: MSBACKUP-HELP!!!

Mwbackup (there was a big lawsuit to stop MS calling it msbackup!) is included in '98, but not Me. I have only tried it once in Me and it failed badly, which may be why it doesn't come with it. Or it could have been down to the fact that I had encrypted folders; but it wasn't just those that failed to back up.

If your daughter has MWBackup, then I guess that she has Me as an upgrade; in which case, if you go to Add/Remove Programs, you may well find Me listed there. If it is, you should be able to uninstall it and go back to 98 without losing anything - but I would do a backup of important files, email, etc. just in case .

I know a lot of people have had trouble with Me and it took me a while to get it about right; but I wouldn't go back now!
We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

Sparky, you don't know what kind of problems my daughter has had with ME...my hair has gotten grayer What is so weird - when she wasn't connected to the internet(4/00-6/01), her WinME worked perfectly (naturally just the Works/Money/photos, Scandisk,defrag,etc)...then when she moved and I talked her into getting cable modem, that's when her WinME started going screwy! It seems that everything she does is like 3-5 seconds behind...maybe it's not the OS, but her HP! See, I am so impatient for HP to reply, that I am even blaming WinME for problems, but then everything is connected, as in a vicious circle - 1 thing goes screwy, then another, and a 3rd...but we can't figure out what is the culprit - the HP or the OS!!!
But there is definitely something wrong, when we keep getting BSOD, errors, etc etc
Daughter isn't as worried about the computer as I am - cuz I have 633MHz and hers is 500MHz, but the performance of everything would make others wonder also.
Anyway, thank you for your comments, do appreciate it very much.
