Word 2000 crashing on File New, File Save, File Sa

Word 2000 crashing on File New, File Save, File Save As:

Word 2000 has suddenly started crashing with the error message:

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in
    module OLEAUT32.DLL at 017f:653561e4.

It does this when I click on File | New, File | Save, or File | Save As

I have tried the repair facility in Word 2000 (Help | Repair), and re-installing Office 2000. Neither of these efforts has worked.

Has anyone else seen this sort of behaviour?

    Regards,
    Bill

Have you seen this? It's very similar.

    MS Technet Article.

    Hello,
thank you for pointing this article out for me. I followed the directions faithfully (had tried option 1 before), but the problem is still there. Word 2000 still crashes on File | New, File | Save, and File | Save As.

    Hi Bill:

    Do a search for OLEAUT32.DLL:
    1. Click the taskbar & press F3.
    2. Make sure the 'look in' is set to the main hard drive.
    3. Type OLEAUT32.DLL in the Named box
    4. Right click OLEAUT32.DLL & choose Properties

What is the date of your OLEAUT32.DLL?
    What version?
    Write it down.

    Go to

    http://support.microsoft.com/servicedesks/...ion/dllinfo.asp

& see if you have the latest version for your setup. If not, you can download it from there.

See if you can then copy it to c:windowssystem

    Hello Phil,
thanks for your suggestion, and the location of the DLL check page.

On Microsoft Support's advice I've reinstalled Win98 to C:win98 (rather than C:Windows), and am slowly reinstalling applications including Office 2000.

Reinstallation has fixed the Word 2000 "File | New, File | New, File | Save, File Save As" problem, but now I have an error message on starting Word 2000 that reads:

"Compile error in hidden module : AutoExec"

I have no idea how to fix this, but would appreciate any advice.

    Regards, Bill

Check the Word startup folder to see what's loading. If you're doing a fresh install, it seems strange. It sounds like an AutoExec macro that's loading. You should see if there are any add-in programs loading.

Also, find normal.dot & open it. Press F11 & see if you have any macros listed. You shouldn't on a fresh install. You can find a list of 3rd party conflicts with Word here. Did you keep your old normal.dot? Maybe there was corruption.

Try renaming normal.dot to abnormal.dot & see if you get the problem. If not, go to start/run & type in

    winword.exe /a

& start Word. If this fixes the problem, then it's an add-in.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello Phil,

Thanks for your suggestions. I was all set to try them, but:

When I turned the machine on this morning (cold boot), the error message was gone, and Word has performed flawlessly since.

I have no idea what happened!

    Thanks and regards,

    Bill
