I recently installed Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron 1720. Just got high speed Internet yesterday. Ran a Shield's Up test and find that almost all my ports are OPEN. The Shield's Up advice is to install an firewall. I have Zone Alarm free installed and working properly.

    Any suggestions?

I had been using XP on this pc with Zone Alarm free and testing results were FULL STEALTH mode by Shield's Up.

You'd probably want to go back over your Firewall settings carefully.
I'm not aware of Zone Alarm having a free firewall that's Windows 7 ready just yet??
I just got back from Shields up at GRC.com and did a full port scan
with the default Windows 7 firewall, all ports were stealthed.

I run ZA free on my Win 7 and it works properly. I also did a ShieldsUP! test and show in stealth mode. When you right click the taskbar icon > Show ZA Control Center > does it say You are protected and no action is required? I trust you turned off your Win 7 firewall before activating ZA. All my ports show stealth, but I failed the "ping" response. Not sure how to configure ZA to not respond to the ping.

You can also run the Leak Test from the same GRC site and if you run that when ZA asks for permission to allow--you have to deny it and it will show you if you passed or not.

Correction, Zone Alarm does have a free version of their firewall for both Window 7 32 & 64 bit operating systems.
    Version 9 I believe.
