recovering the unrecoverable

hello everyone;
in one of my best exercises (of my enrrollmemt in the school of human stupidity), i deleted a file to the recycle bin, and few days later i cleaned that bin.
now, i realize of the mistake made, and "kinda recall" someone mentioning to me that the erasure is not complete (unless there is some over-writing) and there is a way (some utility?) to recover the (supposed) unrecoverable data.
am i recalling correctly?
any help?

Windows changes the directory entry for deleted files, it doesn't actually delete the file.

There are a number of un-delete utilities you can use to attempt recovery - none are guaranteed to work. Backup, on the other hand, is guaranteed to work.

I have had some success with Recuva, but this is unlikely to work if you have been using the problem drive since you deleted the file.

You can recover accidentally deleted files from your backup. You do make a backup? - If not why not - do it NOW.
