Thank you Tony. That is the sort of response we were accustom to here in the Lounge and it is good to see.

We are all here to help and only ask for help to do that. We can't help anyone else unless we can help one another.

Let me correct something I said earlier. The edit box should not be used most of the time. In the interest of keeping things friendly, we want to us PMs when correcting information in a member's post if it is necessary. Changing a spelling mistake or deleting unintentional vulgarity (as in the case where something is innocuous to an American but vulgar to someone in the UK) should be done while drawing the least amount of attention to the original poster's error as possible.

In a case where it's a noticeable technical edit, such as replacing a link to a site with good information but offensive ads with something more appropriate, it could warrant a public notice of the change. Likewise, a mistake that has been commented on by other users already would probably also benefit from a public notice that the mistake has been edited out.

Tony, only when a post was edited and allowed to stand, the customary tradition was either a PM or for the Moderator who made the edit to add text like this:

EDIT: This post edited by JohnBF to remove defamatory comment directed at one software vendor

This served a secondary purpose of pointing out to all Loungers that Rule violations were being actively moderated. Are you now advising that the preference is always to send a PM?

Yes. PM should be the default notification method unless the edit changes something important to the thread's ongoing discussion.

Sorry, I disagree but obviously you're in the boss's camp so I'm powerless in this matter.

John hit the nail on the head when he said that an edit such as his example, needs to be made public! Loungers need to know that the Mods are keeping order. If stuff like that is done by PM, it's no better than censorship.

I have no problem with this, but I'm curious about the reason for the preference for PM.

Isn't this the difference between whispering to someone "your fly is undone" and announcing the fact to all?
However, if everyone has already been discussing your pants - then a PM is pointless.

This sums it up very well.
