Hypertext - File Disappears (Word 97 under WIN98SE)

When a word file contains a hyperlink to the web and I click on it, I get the web site but when I go back to Word the document has disappeared. I have to call it up again and then I am asked if I want to revert to the saved file. I answer No and the document appears again.
Any fix for this?

"Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem"
(and you know what that means)

"Dirtying" the document works great, and is the method I will use. I freauently paste URLs from the web into Word documents, and this is a simple fix for those occasions when I want to bring up the web page from the Word document.

Thanks for your time and advice.

Hi daverich,

Yes it is a confirmed problem, however there is a workaround.

If you insert your hyperlink and add the /n switch using Insert/Field then the document will stay open and a new window will be opened for the link:

1) Go to Insert/Field
2) Select Hyperlink
3) In the text box type or paste a URL inside of quotes
4) Click the Options button and add the /n switch
5) Click OK to insert the Hyperlink field
6) Save your document and try the link.

If you have several hyperlinks, just copy/paste the field you inserted previously and modify it to include the new URL.

For some reason just adding the /n switch to the existing hyperlink field will not work. .

Also, if the document is opened in a Word window then you can dirty the document and it will stay open. A dirty document is one that has unsaved changes. For example you can add a space to dirty it. However this will not work if the document is opened in a browser window.

Re: Hypertext - File Disappears (Word 97 under WIN98SE)

I have read your suggestion to this problem, but I don't think it quite applies to what I typically need to do. I'm usually hyperlinking from a base Word document to a secondary Word document whose file name I don't know - I have to browse to find it. And I want both documents - or a whole string of them - to remain open. Someone showed me the following method, which is incredibly laborious, but does work. Any suggestions on shortening this process? Thanks.

 Select the word or phrase that will serve as the hyperlink (and remember what it is)
 Insert > Field
 Hyperlink > Options > n > OK > Ok
 In place of the hyperlink word or phrase selected will appear the message

As I mentioned in the post you replied to, you could skip a couple of steps by copying/pasting the original field, and you could cut/paste the display text you are using. But short of upgrading to Word 2000 - your steps are about the only way to do it.
