I've just received a notice from Windows Help that a newer version of Help is needed to read this file.

Where do I find a newer version? I don't have any idea about the currect version I'm using.

What version of windows and IE are you using??? I've never seen a notice that a newer version of help to read a file. Does it give any indication where to look for this newer version. Are you certain it's not a spamware or malware site trying to get you to download something???

Ted, see my earlier Vista link, it's only needed when you try to open the old type of Windows Help file (*.hlp), they stopped supplying WinHlp32.exe with the release of Vista.
    Overview
Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) is a Help program that has been included with Microsoft Windows versions starting with the Microsoft Windows 3.1 operating system. However, the Windows Help program has not had a major update for many releases and no longer meets Microsoft's standards. Therefore, starting with the release of Windows Vista, the Windows Help program will not ship as a feature of Windows. If you want to view 32-bit .hlp files, you must download and install the program (WinHlp32.exe) from the Microsoft Download Center.
That's my assumption, unless or until Gloria comes back and tells us differently .

My version of IE is 8.0.6001.18702. There was no indication of where to go to get the newer version.

I,too, have never seen a request while using Help. The notice appeared while doing a search on a program I have installed and used for a long time. I'm sorry to say that I failed to annotate just which program I was requesting help with, that might have been a big help to you. I will check my log for the programs I was using on the date this happened and see if I can make it happen again. If I'm successful I will post back with that information.

Thanks for posting back and I hope to hear more on this subject shortly.

See if Download details: WinHlp32.exe for Windows 7 is what you need.

I don't know why Windows would be prompting you to install a new version. As you are running Windows XP, you should be able to open any of the older help files. As you can see from this article, it is only Vista, Windows 7 and Server 2008 that require the new file.

No one knows why this should happen. As I said in a previous post, I'll try to make it happen again. I read the article and it does not apply to Windows XP as you and I stated. It's no big deal because it only appeared once since I've had my computer. All other requests for help work perfectly.
