My grandson is now sending me .PUB files - great.
Only I don't want to get lassooed into Windows Live or any other Microsoft machinations.
Is there a free program that will read .PUBs
Or even better, convert them into DPF format?
    All help gratefully received!

There are a few free places online that will accept the .PUB file and return them to you as a .PDF.
http://www.pdfonline.com/convert-pdf/ accepts docs up to 2Mb
But you might be better off returning one to him and saying you can't open it. Suggest that he convert it to PDF format before he sends it to you.

There are several versions of MS Publisher formats, so compatibility is a known problem.

Sometimes it is possible to just PRINT the file which won't allow you to see it online, but will give you a readable copy of what your son has sent. That is from How to open Publisher files w/o Microsoft Publisher

And this site Using Scribus to view PUB files has an interesting discussion regarding the issue of reading PUB files.

Any of the myriad PDF 'printers' will convert any of the Office files to a PDF, and then it could be sent to you without problems. I use CutePDF - other file PDF producers are available.

Some time ago I looked for a PUBlisher file viewer, but none did I find.
