    Have this thumb drive that was given to me and would like to format it and have a clean drive, Have tried a registry hack suggested on 7forum site and also tried from the cmd prompt. Any help appreciated.

    Sorry, but there is not enough data here for me to be any help, but maybe it was not designed to be written to, some are like that . USB drives are pretty cheap you may want to get a new one.

    If the device is write protected it is likely to be done in hardware. Does it have a switch?

    Thanks to both of you. I have decided to toss the drive as it is not worth fooling with. No it has no physical switch.
