Some E-Mail Texts Now Arriving As .dat Attachments (OE 5)

First, I am NOT a geek, so my understanding of what I'm trying to describe is limited.

Second, here's what has happened: In response to Woody's Office Watch #6.41, I tried to protect my Outlook Express from Nimda by downloading the IE 5.5 patch available at MS01-020. When I went there, I was sent to a subsequent patch which included the MS01-020. I carefully followed the instructions, and everything went swimmingly until a message popped up saying something like, "You need Service Pack 1." (I won't guarantee that's what it actually said because I almost immediately hit the only option, OK, expecting to be led to what I next needed.) The OK button, however, led me only back to -- nothing. At least nothing further to do. Everything seemed normal, but I had no idea whether I had done actually done anything.

Third, after fooling around for a few minutes, blindly trying to find Service Pack 1, or whatever it was I lacked, I quit and went on with my business.

Fourth, I have finally concluded that I accomplished something, however, because I am now receiving some of my e-mails (some, not all) as messages completely without text. The text is apparently contained in a .dat file attachment -- which I am unable to open.

Fifth, what have I done? Even more important, WHAT DO I DO NOW?! I'd like to be able to open my e-mails (unless, of course, anything arriving in this form really is trying to do me damage, and I am being protected).

Thanks for whatever help you can offer.

on the attachments- are they as winmail.dat or att*.dat? if so, they are caused by the sender, not your system. express normally hides the dat files since it knows you can't use them. (outlook creates them when sending RTF messages)

do you have a message body and the attachment or is the message blank with only the attachment?

Re: Some E-Mail Texts Now Arriving As .dat Attachments (OE 5)

I don't know what kind of .dat file they are. When I click on them to open, I am sent to a place that tells me they are .dat files, and asks me what program I want to use to open them. No further information is supplied.

I receive NO message at all. It's blank, with only the attachment.

In the process of trying to learn if I could identify what kind of .dat file they are, I tried checking Properties on each of the messages I still have, which came in this way. The only commonality my non-tech eyes could see is that all list for Content-Type: heck_Contect_Type.

Don't know if that helps or not!

Let me add to what I have said earlier because I am more desperate all the time to read the mail I'm getting, but am unable to open because it has arrived as a .dat file attachment.

Up to this point, the mail which has arrived that way has been "institutional" -- reminders, "word-a-day" newsletters, etc. But I have now received a message from a friend in Norway which I would REALLY like to read!

I am still seeking a solution to the whole problem: How do I keep this from happening? But, in the meantime, if there is anyone who can offer information about how I can open these .dat files, I'd appreciate that, too.

Thanks!

can you upload one of the smaller dat's so we can see what exactly you are getting - or better yet, one of the eml's with the dat attached. (messages)

I'd be glad to do that -- tell me how. Are you just asking me to forward one of these e-mails to you, or is it something more complicated than that?

use the attach file button on the reply form.

drag and drop one of the messages to your desktop, then click the browse button on the reply page and locate it. when you click the post button, it'll be uploaded.

MJ,

Thanks for helping -- but I need help even figuring out how to help you help me! I understand the basic principle of drag and drop. However, I don't know how to find an individual e-mail message so that I can drag and drop it. When I open Windows Explore (or My Computer), where do I go to find the message I want to upload to you?

Thanks for your patience! KKG

MJ, I think I figured it out. Please let me know if this doesn't work!
Thanks again -- KKG
Okay -- that didn't work. I did manage to save the message to the desktop, but, when I posted it, I received an error message. An .eml file is not one that can be attached.
Now what?

must be a nimda virus block change the eml extension to txt - it'll upload then and be easier for us to look at.

MJ, I'm feeling smarter all the time. I think I managed to change the .eml to .txt without asking for instructions! Hope this works. Thanks for all your help.

learning is fun, isn't it?

from looking at it - it's hard to say what is going on. Two lines caught my eye:

Content-Type: heck_Contect_Type
X-UIDL: A7i!!",Q!!?dp!!eT?!!

the content type is definitely not right.

if you select the message and file > properties, details tab, message source button - does it look the same as in the text file you posted?

how many different newsletters are you getting as dat attachments? I'm wondering if the problem is on their end or your mail server.

i'll subscribe to the list and see what happens.

Re: Some E-Mail Texts Now Arriving As .dat Attachments (OE 5)

MJ, Yes, I keep reminding myself that learning is fun! I printed out the .txt file, and compared it, character by character, to what I get by looking at file/properties/details -- and it's identical. That Content-Type caught my eye, too, and it is present in every one of these strange messages. That's the only thing I've noticed that all seem to have in common (in terms of properties).

I am receiving three newsletters this way, but have also received two personal messages, another from a business, and also several messages from "Mail Delivery Subsystem," telling me that certain messages I sent to a school district network that's down have been returned as undeliverable -- all in this same blank message, .dat attachment format.

In the meantime, I have also received many messages from various sources that have been completely normal.

And all this has happened since I tried to install the patch to protect me from Nimda!

Thanks, MJ, for your help. I'm going to have go off-line now, but I will check back in the morning. All of Woody's raving in his newsletters about the helpfulness of the Lounge is definitely deserved! KKG

Wordsmith.org seems to be a relatively innocuous website and related mailing list which among other things sends out a new "word-a-day" for those who are caught up with earning new and exciting ways to impress their friends in conversations. It's at www.wordsmith.org

Re: Some E-Mail Texts Now Arriving As .dat Attachments (OE 5)

Thanks, Dave. I actually subscribe to the Word-A-Day mailings; my problem now is that I am unable to open them! And some other messages, too, which are now arriving with blank text, and simply as .dat files. MaryJ had suggested I upload one of the smaller of those files so she -- and others of you -- can see what they're like.

I'd certainly appreciate any help I can get! Every day I'm getting more messages I can't open! KKG
