OK, I have done this before but it has been quite sometime and naturally with smaller drives and other versions of windows.
I just purchased a new 750 gig HDD to replace my current smaller HDD. I did quite a bit of looking around and checking
and was assured that my computer could handle the upgrade.
Dell Dimension E510 computer. Currently running XP. Pretty much ran out of disk space and am putting data on an external HDD.
I want to remove the current HDD and put in the new 750 HDD and then install Win 7 on the disk.
I have read "Clean-install Windows 7 from the upgrade disc By Woody Leonhard " and think I should be ok doing this.
Should I, will I be able to, perform a new disk format prior to installing Win 7? Even if the disk is already formatted?
I thought I read somewhere that doing such a formatting prior to Win 7 installation was a good idea even if the disk had already
been formatted (and I am not really sure this new disk has been). I would, of course, be performing a full complete formatting.

Naturally I have made a back-up to an external HDD of all my data. I have also taken screen shots of pretty much everything I
can think of as a precaution.

Any thoughts, suggestions are very much appreciated.

    Thank you.

I did a clean install on a brand new (and larger) hard drive with no problems whatsoever and I'm the kind of guy who seems to have problems It was very fast, even on a three year old 1.67 Ghz Core 2 processor and only 2 GB ram. I seem to remember only one re-boot. I love Win7.

This is a great site to walk you through the clean install. Once you have installed Win 7 see How To Geek for hundreds of tips.

Another great place to look is the tutorial section of sevenforums.com. As my home forum, I am a little biased, but Microsoft MVP Shawn Brink has done a great job there.

As long as you choose a custom install you will be able to format the drive. I'd do it just because I'd have no idea which version of NTFS was used to format the HD. Windows 7 will install just fine on an older version but why not take advatage of any changes that may have been made to NTFS. All it takes is a little time.

also if you are swapping a SATA drive, you may require drivers from your manufacturer or motherboard provider to see the disk correctly (if Win 7 can't see it). Also make sure your system BIOS is up to date and disk mode set to AHCI to get the maximum speed from the drive and controller.
